I was given a beautiful hand made salt box by a friend, but he put a varnish or shellac finish on it that smells so strong, is it safe to put salt into to use for cooking.

Try letting it air out for a week or 2 to see if that helps the smell dissipate. If it does then a hard varnish finish should be fine for dry material like salt.

If your food is not hot or liquid, I am sure it is not an issue, but that is only opinion!
