Ever tried carving a ring out of Arbutus wood?

by Mark
(Vancouver)

Hi Ron, great site here, huge wealth of useful info!

I'm thinking of carving a ring for my girlfriend, and was hoping to do it from arbutus wood. You mention that arbutus tends to crack as it's drying out... does this mean I should maybe choose a different wood (something perhaps more solid, like walnut or yew (?)). I'd prefer arbutus as it's local, and such a cool tree.

I was looking at your pendants, and they look really solid, as if you could be carving rings with the same wood. Have you tried it, or do you have any advice?

cheers,
mark.

hi Ron,
I appreciate the prompt replies.
Just wanted to share this link (it was partly what inspired me to try this carving), it's on the site "instructables", a cool site with a lot of DIY projects.

hi again Ron,
just waiting to hear back from you on whether or not you can help me out with a couple raw/dry arbutus pieces. If you don't have anything handy, I'll go ahead + try to find another source.
much appreciated,
mark.

rings...
by: Mark

hey Ron,
thanks a lot for the feedback. I would love to try it, and probably will. There's a bit of a timing issue.. I'd like to finish the project within about 6 weeks (birthday), and not sure if I'll get out to where I can collect any Arbutus in the near future -- I live in central Vancouver. Also not sure how long the wood should dry...weeks/months? If you happen to have any appropriate pieces, already dry, would it be possible to buy 1 or 2 dowel-shaped pieces from you, and have them mailed here. I'm happy to pay for the raw wood, and for the shipping.
Let me know -- I think you have my gmail addie if you want to contact me directly.
cheers,
mark.

Arbutus Wood Rings
by: Arbutus Ron

Hi Mark,

Thanks for writing and I appreciate your comments on my site!

Once Arbutus wood is dry it is very stable. So to make a wood ring from it, just use a piece of very dry wood. Bring it indoors and it will be quite dry after a bit.

Yes indeed I know of several people who have made Arbutus rings and love them.

It is very doable once the wood is nice and dry.

Have fun!

And do post a photo after you are successful!

Arbutus Ron
