food safe finish for hot drinks

Hello, I was wondering what finish you would choose (if any) for a coffee stir stick?

I've noticed the posts below state that hot liquids would not work with a natural oil so I was wondering if a varathane would be safe?

I would use no finish. Allow the stick to dry after washing. Then sand off the raised grain with very fine sandpaper a few times after each use. Once it remains smooth no more sanding is needed. This way it will remain smooth with a patina like finish.
