Food Safe Paint?

I am engraving a wooden chopping board for some friends and would like to colour the boarder, or perhaps the whole thing. I wonder what stains/paints would be bright but also food safe.

I've read about milk paint but it's very hard to track down the UK (I'm based in London) and the colours don't seem that vibrant? Any other suggestions? Is painting and then sealing with something food safe an option maybe?
