Is Arbutus wood safe for childrens toys/teething rings?

by Gareth J Clayton

I have seen your website on numerous occasions and I am always inspired by your craft!

I live in Victoria, although I'm originally from the UK.

I like to carve wood and have numerous projects on the go.

I have been able to come across some nice pieces of arbutus on my walks and was wondering if you could advise me on something.

I know you make both food utensils and children's toys from the wood. Is it 100% safe for this kind of use? I trust that you are using it correctly of course! I was just thinking about making some of the wood I have found into a small toy for a very small baby/toddler?

Any advice you may be able to offer me would be gratefully received!

Thanks so much for reading this message.

Food safe toy

Yes Arbutus is fine to use as long as you leave it with no finish or just a food safe oil like walnut oil.

And make sure the shape and size has no danger of swallowing or hurting your baby.

I have never heard of a reaction to Arbutus wood. So YES I would say it is safe for your grandkids.

Mine have used them happily.

Arbutus wood is safe in my experience...
by: Arbutus Ron

Hey, great question!

In fact I make Arbutus teething toys for my grand daughters!

The wood is pitch free, extremely hard and in my opinion perfect for babies' teething.

Just do not put any finish on it and sand nice and smooth.

Let me know how it goes.

Good luck!
